PLANNING YOUR EVENT
So, I can do anything?
Sort of. You can do anything awesome and local. Being harmful or exclusionary is not awesome (fact!), so please keep it on the positive and keep your risks smart. Some of the other Qs in this FAQ might help steer you away from some things we just can’t accommodate, as well as give you food for thought on what we can.
Can you help me pay for my event?
Yes. Choose Yer Own is pumped to help make any kind of event happen, and would love to meet with event submitters to work out budget arrangements on a case by case basis. Please keep in mind that Choose Yer Own events aren’t run for profit, and that we like things DIY and on the cheap –we want to show people that anyone can change their city, even for a moment. In other words, we probably can’t pay for your Monster Truck Rally event (even though that would be sooooooo awesome) but we can help out with supplies.
Should my mom submit an event? My landlord? My boss? My neighbour? My prof?
Yes. So should you and all of your rad friends with cool secret talents.
What should I expect after I submit my event?
We’ll respond within a couple days to let you know that we got it and maybe ask some questions so everyone’s on the same page. We’ll be in touch in a more formal way in early July to ask about scheduling, anything you might need, and to confirm.
ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL
When I go to Choose Yer Own, what will it be like?
It will be like amazing things happening to you at all times! The CYOwn crew works with event organizers to make sure all goings-on are welcoming and involving, and many ask for some kind of participation. Expect to hop on your bike for breakfast by the river, then over to an 8-bit music workshop, then to a man-made DIY beach party, and off to a live re-enactment of a hollywood blockbuster before bed. Or drift in and out while you do your own thing. Don’t expect to just be part of an audience –we don’t really do that sort of thing.
How much does it cost?
Most events at Choose Yer Own are free. A few workshops have a small per-session cost to recoup losses for supplies, but no event is run for profit.
